Investigation Launched by US into Amazon-Owned Zoox Self-Driving Cars

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary evaluation of Amazon’s autonomous Zoox vehicles following incidents of unexpected braking causing rear-end collisions. This investigation by NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) follows reports of two such incidents involving Zoox-equipped robotaxis. In response, the NHTSA has begun examining 500 Zoox autonomous vehicles to ensure safety. This investigation comes as Zoox announced plans to expand its vehicle testing in California and Nevada, increasing competition with Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving taxi service. To date, Zoox has not commented on the ongoing investigation.
