**Exploring Possibility of Selling Northeast Gasoline Reserve in 2024**
In a recent development outlined in the draft text of a funding bill, the United States is considering selling its 1 million barrel Northeast gasoline reserve during fiscal year 2024. This reserve was initially established in 2014 in response to the fuel shortages experienced by motorists in the northeastern United States following Superstorm Sandy. The reserve is strategically located in key areas such as New York Harbor, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland, Maine.
According to the details within the bill, the proceeds from the potential sale of the refined gasoline products within the reserve would be directed to the Treasury’s general fund. The bill is anticipated to go through the approval process this week.
Furthermore, the bill specifies that if the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve is indeed sold, the Secretary of Energy would be restricted from establishing any new regional petroleum product reserve without explicit funding requested in advance of an annual budget submission by the President and subsequent approval by Congress.
It is important to note that one barrel of gasoline contains approximately 42 gallons and that the current price of gasoline in New York Harbor is estimated to be around $2.29 per gallon.
In addition to the discussions on the Northeast gasoline reserve, the bill also includes a provision aimed at preventing Chinese entities from purchasing crude oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer mentioned that the U.S. House of Representatives will need to vote on this bill prior to the Senate’s consideration, with expectations aligned for completion before Friday.
This potential decision regarding the Northeast gasoline reserve reflects a strategic assessment of current energy allocations and reserves within the United States, while also addressing international trade considerations through the prohibition of specific transactions. The coming days will shed more light on the outcomes of these crucial deliberations.
